USS S-21 was decommissioned from the USN in 1942 and simultaneously transferred to United Kingdom where she was renamed HMS P553. She remained in American waters, based at Halifax, Canada, as an anti-submarine warfare training boat.

14-09-1942 : Transferred to the Royal Navy as HMS P553
14-07-1944 : Returned to USN
23-03-1945 : Sunk as target
