Able Seaman Oliver Gaffney P/JX 291388 died in an accident on 6th May 1944 while HMS Sirdar was on passage to Trincomalee in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and was on a stopover at Aden.

Oliver Gaffney died in the RAF Hospital at Aden from a fractured vertebra/spinal cord injury, the result of a diving accident.

Twenty three year old Oliver Gaffney originally from Willington, County Durham was the son of James William and Mary Ellen Gaffney of Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. He is buried in the Maala Cemetery in Yemen in Grave no F.10
