HMS Truant a group one T Class completed in 1939. Seen here with snort mast raised. The additional pipe to starboard indicates this was an experimental setup. Decommissioned in 1945 and lost under tow to the scrap yard in 1946, these dates give some idea as to when the Royal Navy began snort experiments.

He died in Colombo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) of a fracture of the base of the skull, the result of an accidental fall.

NOTE: There is a local Barrow connection as John Ellis was the husband of Mona Ellis (nee Clitheroe) of West View, Barrow in Furness, Lancashire.

09-04-1940 HMS Truant torpedoes and damages the German light cruiser Karlsruhe off Kristiansand, Norway.
23-05-1940 HMS Truant fires two torpedoes against the British merchant Alster off the Breidsundet, Norway. The German merchant Alster was captured in the Vestfjord off Norway on 10 April 1940 by the British destroyer HMS Icarus. HMS Truant was unaware of this but fortunately both torpedoes missed their target.
03-09-1940 HMS Truant intercepts the German merchant Tropic Sea. The Tropic Sea is scuttled in the Bay of Biscay about 235 nautical miles north-west of Cape Finisterre, Spain.
22-09-1940 HMS Truant torpedoes and sinks the Italian merchant Providenza about 4 nautical miles south-east of Ischia Island, Italy.
13-12-1940 HMS Truant torpedoes and sinks the Italian merchant Sebastiano Bianchi south of Calabria, Italy.
16-12-1940 HMS Truant torpedoes and sinks the Italian tanker Bonzo east of Punta Stilo.
03-02-1941 HMS Truant torpedoes and sinks the Italian merchant Multedo north-west of Benghazi, Lybia.
04-02-1941 HMS Truant attacks an Italian convoy near Benghazi, Libya with 3 torpedoes which miss their targets.
11-02-1941 HMS Truant attacks the Italian merchant Bainsizza with gunfire about 45 nautical miles north-north-west of Tripoli, Libya. The target was not hit and Truant was forced to dive by the escort. HMS Truant attacked again with 3 torpedoes about 60 nautical miles north-north-west of Tripoli, Libya. All torpedoes missed.
19-03-1941 HMS Truant attacks the small Italian tanker Labor off Buerat, Libya. All torpedoes missed.
17-04-1941 HMS Truant sinks the Italian auxiliary submarine chaser V 62/Vanna with gunfire off Apollonia, Libya.
21-04-1941 HMS Truant damages the small Italian tanker Prometeo with gunfire off Tripoli, Libya.
06-05-1941 HMS Truant torpedoes sinks the Italian passenger/cargo ship Bengasi about 3 nautical miles south-east off the Cavoli lighthouse, Sardinia, Italy.
23-10-1941 HMS Truant torpedoes sinks the German merchant Virginia S. in the Otranto Strait about 30 nautical miles east of Capo Santa Maria di Leuca, Italy. The Italian Arborea was missed during the same attack.
31-10-1941 HMS Truant torpedoes sinks the Italian tanker Meteor 2 nautical miles south-east of Punta Penna, Ortona, Italy.
07-12-1941 HMS Truant fires two torpedoes against the German merchant Bellona off Suda Bay, Crete, Greece. Both torpedoes missed their target.
11-12-1941 HMS Truant torpedoes and heavily damages the Italian torpedo boat Alcione north of Crete.
19-02-1942 HMS Truant fires 6 torpedoes against the Japanese light cruiser Nagara north of Bali, Netherlands East Indies. All torpedoes missed.
01-04-1942 HMS Truant sinks two Japanese merchant cargo ships in Malacca Strait, 60 miles off the coast of Sumatra
03-07-1942 HMS Truant torpedoes and sinks the Japanese army cargo ship Tamon Maru No.1 in the Strait of Malacca.
