She was originally named P31, renamed Ullswater in February 1943 and finally renamed Uproar in April 1943.
One of her first actions, whilst serving as P31, was to participate in the operation that led to the sinking of the Bismarck, though she did not see action directly.
Adoption

Adopted by Cirencester and District whose Warship Week was held between 7-14 March 1942 when £428,019 was raised in National Savings. The inscription on the Admiralty presentation plaque is: ‘Presented by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to Cirencester Rural District Council to Commemorate the Adoption of HMS P31 during Warship Week March 1942’. Michael Gardner was ‘Officer of the Watch’ on the bridge whilst on patrol in the Mediterranean. It is understood that an order was misunderstood, and the Submarine started to dive without warning. Michael Gardner was washed overboard and was lost. |
