On This Day - November 4

1940 Tetrarch (N 77) HMS Tetrarch torpedoes and sinks the Italian merchant Snia Amba off Benghazi, Libya.
1941 P 511 USS R-3 was transferred to the Royal Navy at New London. She joined 7th Flotilla at Holy Loch for anti-submarine warfare training in January 1942.

1941 P 551 / JastrzÄ…b (Polish) Decommissioned from USN and simultaneously transferred to United Kingdom where she was renamed HMS P551
1942 X 3 (Piker) Submarine X-3 sank in a training accident in Loch Striven due to a leaking engine valve. The Submarine was raised later the same day by the Salvage Vessel HMS Tedworth.

There were no casualties, all three Officers onboard (all Sub Lieutenants) were Trainees and managed to escape safely using DSEA sets after about 40 minutes on the bottom in approximately 110 feet of water. One (Sub Lieutenant John Thornton Lorimer RNVR) continued to serve in X-Craft but the other two, Sub Lieutenants Gay and Laites, transferred to another Branch of the Navy.

After refitting at Vickers at Barrow in Furness the Submarine was returned to service.
1944 Terrapin (P 323) HMS Terrapin torpedoes and sinks the Japanese minesweeper W5 in Malacca Strait.
