1880 Resurgam The world's first mechanically-driven submarine the 30-ton Resurgam, built by the Rev.George Garrett, an English clergyman, sank in a heavy swell 20 miles off Great Ormes Head near Llandudno north Wales, whilst being towed to Portsmouth.

1941 Upright (N 89) HMS Upright torpedoes and sinks the Italian light cruiser Armando Diaz east off Sfax, Tunisia.

1943 Torbay (N 79) HMS Torbay damages the Italian auxiliary minesweeper Monte Argentario with gunfire off Ajaccio, Corsica, France.

2019 Warspite The Secretary of State for Defence, Right Honourable Gavin Williamson CBE MP, announced "Warspite" as the name of the third in class submarine for the Dreadnought programme.
2019 Astute (S 119) HMS Astute and Type 23 frigate HMS St Albans faced tough weather conditions as they took advantage of working together on their anti-submarine warfare capabilities to do personnel transfer training. St Albans' Merlin helicopter from 814 Naval Air Squadron flew between both vessels, winching submariners and sailors while battling wind and rain.

Lieutenant Commander Andrew Mitchell, flight commander on board the Portsmouth-based frigate, said: "The transfer was one of the most challenging, and professionally rewarding experiences. We don't get to do this often and certainly not in such adverse weather conditions."
