Having completed his Continuous Service engagement post WWI he re-entered the RN on 27th September 1937 with a new Official Number of D/JX 155150. Norman Badcock who had been serving in HMS Ferret in Londonderry in Ireland died from uraemia in the Royal Naval Hospital, Stonehouse. |

He was at home on leave at the time and it is understood that he died from accidental coal gas poisoning overnight in the 'Writing and Rest Room' at the 'Toc H' Headquarters in Spalding. Two other men (assumed to be friends but non-submariners) are also reported to have died in the accident and a verdict of misadventure was reported at the inquest. In August 1945 he was serving in Submariner HMS Seadevil in Malta. He is eported to have been drowned in Marsamxett Harbour in Malta. | Frederick Clowrey was born in the 3rd Quarter of 1919 and is believed to have been the son of Frederick Peter Clowrey (Senior) and Annie Clowrey (nee Meechin). There was an elder sister, Mary Clowrey, born in 1916. A torpedo attack was made on a Japanese merchant vessel off the north coast of Java. The attack was unsuccessful and the Commanding Officer (Lt. Peter Barnsley Marriott, DSO, RN) then surfaced for a gun action. Although several hits were made and the gun jammed at least once, the enemy counter attacked with gunfire and then attempted to ram. Stoic was dived to safety but unfortunately the gun trainer, Frederick was then found to be missing. It was assumed that he had accidentally been left on deck and lost overboard and either drowned or had been taken prisoner. |

| 'Alexander Douglas was born in 1922 and he was the son of James McGregor Douglas and Helen Douglas of Coleraine, Co. Londonderry. It is not reported when he was drafted to the Submarine Depot Ship HMS Forth (3rd Submarine Flotilla) at the Holy Loch for Submarine HMS Sceptre. Alexander is reported to have died onboard HMS Sceptre. He was sleeping in his hammock just clear of a hydraulic ram when the ram moved across at full power killing him instantly. At the time HMS Sceptre was lying off Bergen, Norway, having just towed the XCraft X-24 there for a raid on the Floating Dock at Bergen (Operation Heckle). He was the son of Mr. F Dunkey and Mrs. Matilda E Dunkey. George, who was trained as a lathe operator, joined the Royal Navy at HMS Glendower on 9th November 1942. It is likely that SCEPTRE was at Loch Cairnbawn (Port HHZ) for training in towing X-Craft when the accident occurred. George Dunkey was not recovered. |

In the 1939 Register he was reported to be a Newspaper Salesman (canvasser) living at 33, Westwood Street. He is understood to have joined the Royal Navy, trained as a submariner and was drafted to Submarine HMS Supreme. It is understood that he died in the Withington Emergency Hospital, Manchester following a brain haemorrhage. |

It is understood that he died at home from coal gas poisoning having committed suicide Bradford Observer - Saturday 23 September 1944 Shipley Seaman Gassed Himself A verdict that "Death was due to from coal-gas poisoning, self-administered while suffering from mental' depression," was returned by the jury at an inquest at Shipley yesterday on Ordinary Seaman Leslie Mawson (20). of 14, West Royd Road. Shipley. Mawson had been ill since May and had recently returned from hospital at Liverpool. He was suffering from a duodenal ulcer, which brought about a nervous condition. |

| John Pretty was the son of William and Minnie Pretty. He was a submariner before joining X Craft and, on 16th February 1942 he had been serving in Submarine HMS Thrasher. The Submarine was under tow by HMS Syrtis in the Pentland Firth when the Officer of the Watch (Lieutenant Charles Blythe, RNR) was washed overboard from the bridge of HMS Syrtis. The Commanding Officer of HMS Syrtis reversed course in an attempt to rescue his man overboard and accidentally collided with Submarine X-22. Submarine X-22 sank at once with all hands. |

A Tribute To Submariners
I have often looked for an opportunity of paying tribute to our submariners.
There is no branch of His Majesty's Forces which in this war has suffered the same proportion of total loss as our submarine service.
It is the most dangerous of all services.
That is perhaps the reason why the First Lord tells me that the entry into it is keenly sought by Officers and Men.
I feel sure the House would wish to testify its gratitude and admiration to our Submariners for their Skill - Courage and Devotion which has proved of inestimable value to the sustenance of our country.
