The son of Charles Henry and Alice May Swadling. He had a younger brother Gordon Swadling. In September 1939 he was employed as a Gas Fitters Mate and was living with his parent at 130, Little Marlow Road, Marlow. Buckinghamshire.

After the outbreak of WWII he joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker. By August 1945 he had been advanced to Acting Leading Stoker and he was serving in the Submarine Depot Ship HMS Wolfe at Trincomalee in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka).

He isreported to have died from injuries received in an accidental fall on board HMS Wolfe.

A Tribute To Submariners

I have often looked for an opportunity of paying tribute to our submariners.

There is no branch of His Majesty's Forces which in this war has suffered the same proportion of total loss as our submarine service.

It is the most dangerous of all services.

That is perhaps the reason why the First Lord tells me that the entry into it is keenly sought by Officers and Men.

I feel sure the House would wish to testify its gratitude and admiration to our Submariners for their Skill - Courage and Devotion which has proved of inestimable value to the sustenance of our country.

In some cases there are different Names and Dates of Birth mentioned in the notes, especially in the First World War, as many young men told lies in order to join early. Their be variations between birth names and the names the men chose to serve under.

RN Submarines scuttled or captured in WWII

Descriptions of the events in WWII that led to the loss of Royal Navy Submarines in actions where the submarines were sunk, usually by scuttling, with the captains and crew taken prisoner. Included are two variations - in one case the submarine was captured and in another the captain was killed in action.
