Arthur Edwards was the son of Henry and Alice Edwards. Having served for a number of years in the RNVR, he signed on for twelve years with the Royal Navy on 25th March 1930 and volunteered for service in Submarines in 1933. Arthur Edwards served on both Ships and Submarines, including the Battleship HMS Valiant, the Cruiser HMS Sussex and Submarines L56, Swordfish, Snapper, L27 and P556. In January 1941, he was awarded a Mention in Dispatches for his actions during an attack on an escorted enemy supply ship. Arthur Edwards was killed in a Battery explosion onboard Submarine P556 whilst alongside at HMS Dolphin and all others onboard at the time were injured except one. Thirty-two-year-old Arthur Edwards was the husband of Marion Margaret Edwards of Barnes, Surrey and father of Marion Alice Edwards. |

A Tribute To Submariners
I have often looked for an opportunity of paying tribute to our submariners.
There is no branch of His Majesty's Forces which in this war has suffered the same proportion of total loss as our submarine service.
It is the most dangerous of all services.
That is perhaps the reason why the First Lord tells me that the entry into it is keenly sought by Officers and Men.
I feel sure the House would wish to testify its gratitude and admiration to our Submariners for their Skill - Courage and Devotion which has proved of inestimable value to the sustenance of our country.
