As a young schoolboy I wanted to be a captain of a Royal Navy destroyer (described as greyhounds of the sea). But I was born on the wrong side of the track. One needed tradition, money, a good family background, and education, Oxford or Cambridge schooling, but I didn’t qualify on any of those counts. I left school at age 14 to work in an engineering company. Three years later World War II started, and I was 17 years of age.
The twin-funnelled K Boat was the biggest, fastest submarine of World War I. It suffered a series of accidents from the day trials began.
This documentary answers questions about the numerous accidents, had while reconstructing the best concealed debacle in British naval history.
