This Submarine was one of a Group of ten H Class submarines ordered in the Emergency War Programme of November 1914 and built (using American supplied components) at the Canadian Vickers Yard at Montreal. Of these Submarines H1 to H4 were commissioned in late May 1915 at Quebec City and then made their way to the Mediterranean escorted by the Armed Merchant Cruiser HMS Calgarian.
Sailed in company with H2, H3 and H4 from St. John's, Newfoundland to Gibraltar with the AMC Calgarian. Each boat was towed for one day to allow maintenance to be carried out.
Whilst in the Sea of Marmara in 1915 engaged and sank one gunboat, five steamers and seventeen large sailing ships.
She also destroyed three trains all by gun action.
