Unofficially named Exciter
A flotilla of mini-submarines set off to sink or cripple the mighty German battleship Tirpitz. Among the men behind this attack was Max Shean from Perth, a volunteer for one of World War II's most daring and hazardous naval missions. Shean's courage in command of the X-craft submarines in Europe and the Pacific earned him an unrivalled reputation as a leader whose aggressive instincts were always tempered by concern for his crew. He died on June 15, 2009, aged 90.

| Sank after collision with the Norwegian Atle Jarl off the River Tyne entrance 29th April 1940. Lt. Low along with three ratings remained below shutting bulkhead doors while the remainder of the crew reached safety. Lt. Low was posthumously awarded the George Cross. All four who remained behind were lost. | |
Combat veteran Frank Ramsey (Gene Hackman) and his second-in-command Ron Hunter (Denzel Washington) are the chief officers on board US nuclear submarine Crimson Tide.
They are heading for Russia, ready to intervene in an escalating crisis which could result in the outbreak of World War 3. When they then receive orders to launch their missiles, Ramsay and Hunter clash over the validity of the command and mutiny ensues.
