Vickers and Barrow are names synonymous with the development of the submarine. Hundreds of submarines covering virtually every class have been built for the Royal Navy and foreign Navies. This site is dedicated to not only to those who have served on Her Majesty's Submarines but also to those employees past and present whose skills and efforts have given pride to the phrase 'Barrow built' and made the name Vickers known and respected throughout the world.

| 1941 | Trident (N 52) | While returning to base at Polyarnoe, Russia, HMS Trident is fired upon but missed by the German submarine U-566. |
| 1941 | Otus (N 92) | HMS Otus fires a torpedo at an enemy armed merchant cruiser of 4000 tons in the central Mediterranean about 175 nautical miles east of Valetta, Malta. The torpedo misses. |

| 1942 | Traveller (N 48) | HMS Traveller HMS Traveller was off Tobruk, patrolling at periscope depth when she was bombed by an unseen aircraft. There was no damage. |
| 1944 | Strongbow (P 235) | HMS Strongbow sinks three Siamese sailing vessels with gunfire off the west coast of Siam. |
| 1944 | Vigorous (P 74) | HMS Vigorous claims the sinking of two sailing vessels off Paximadia Island, Greece. |

This study explodes a number of popular myths, such as the claim that David Bushnell's one-man Turtle chased the British fleet out of New York Harbour in 1776.
The truth about underwater exploration, however, is stranger than the fiction, not least because of its secrets and brotherhoods, duplicity and deception, determination and despair, frequent failure and rare triumph.
