1914: 6th Flotilla Chatham, HMS Bonaventure and Hebe
It is believed that due to C9's actions the bombardment of Hartlepool by the German battle-cruisers Seydlitz, Moltke and Blücher on 16th December 1914 was brought to an aburpt end when they thought that C9 was in a position to attack them having forced her way out of the port.
During this raid there were 86 people killed and 424 wounded.
In 1944 the Royal Navy succeeded in modifying one of its conventional submarines, Seraph, to match the performance of the radically new Type XXI fast boats that intelligence showed Germany was developing.1 If the enemy had succeeded in getting the Typ XXI to sea in large numbers, they would have revolutionised submarine warfare, and severely tested Allied anti-submarine defences.
After the narrow defeat of their U-boat fleet in the First World War, the German Navy analyzed their experiences and devised new theories and plans for a future conflict.
The principal result of this study was the development of the daring concept of Rudeltaktik, which involved co-ordinated pack attacks on the Allied convoy systems that had proved so successful in defence
