| 29-10-1944 | Tally-Ho departed Ceylon carrying a secret OSS-sponsored three-man Free Thai team bound for Siam. On the way, Tally-Ho tried unsuccessfully to intercept a German submarine. The journey was further delayed by a search for downed Allied airmen near the Straits of Malacca. The Free Thai team was finally landed on KoKradan, Trang Province, on 9 November. |

Ian Trenowden HMS Tally Ho, captained by Commander L.W.A. Bennington was a T-class submarine which achieved spectacular success in the Second World War. Her name was chosen for her by Winston Churchill and it proved a very suitable one for a hunting submarine. In a single commission, lasting from 15th March 1943 to 26th February 1945, she operated in the Malacca Strait. |
Hugh Marrack was born on 5th Jul 1888 and he joined the Royal Navy as a Cadet on 15th Jan 1903. He was promoted to Midshipman on 15th Jul 1904 and to Sub Lieutenant on 15th Oct 1907. Sub Lieutenant Hugh Marrack was appointed to HMS Mercury at Portsmouth 'for Instruction in Submarine Boats' on 15th Aug 1908. He was appointed to HMS Mercury 'for Submarines' on 1st Jan 1909. In August 1909 he was appointed to HMS Bonaventure at Queenstown 'for Submarines'
It was the Italians who pioneered the use of two-man human torpedoes or 'chariots', and their attacks on ships of the Royal Navy in Alexandria Harbour in 1941 caused Winston Churchill to write to the Chief of Staffs committee to enquire what was being done to emulate these daring attacks.
The result was the development of British 'chariots' which were regarded as stop-gaps until the X-Craft or midget submarines could be deployed.

Tally-Ho was never converted, therefore no fin!! Hope this helps.

For some time now, I have been trying like mad to get a photo of Tally Ho! on which I did my sea training on out of Blockhouse/Dolphin, and just can't find one with the fin. Plenty of the WW2 version, I even have one when she was laid up in Birkenhead after the war, never realising I would serve on her. My time was not long as I passed out when we did a deep dive and was reverted back to gens. Hope you can help.
