1766 First submarine attack During the Revolutionary War, the American submersible craft Turtle attempts to attach a time bomb to the hull of British Admiral Richard Howe's flagship Eagle in New York Harbor. It was the first use of a submarine in warfare.
1838 Grace Darling Grace Darling, the daughter of a lighthouse keeper, made her famous rescue of the crew of the Forfarshire, which was shipwrecked, near the Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast

1939 Seahorse (S 98) HMS Seahorse was docked at Rosyth.
1939 Wilk (N 64) (Dutch) Beginning of 2 days under continuous depth charge attacks and had to lay on the sea bottom during the daytime, suffering only minor damage.
1941 Thunderbolt (N 25) HMS Thunderbolt torpedoes and sinks the Italian merchant Sirena about 50 miles west of Benghasi, Libya.
1942 Ultimatum (P 34) HMS Ultimatum fires four torpedoes against the Italian merchant Luciano Manara in the central Mediterranean about 45 nautical miles south-west of Schiza Island, Greece. All torpedoes fired missed.
1943 Shakespeare (P 221) HMS Shakespeare torpedoes and sinks the Italian submarine Velella about 18 nautical miles east of Licosa Island, south of Salerno, Italy. There were no survivors.
