P 39

Fate: During an air raid on Malta on 26th March 1942 Submarine P39, which was alongside at the Dockyard for repairs, was hit by a bomb from a Stuka dive bomber. The bomb exploded under the Engine Room Artificer's Mess and almost blew the submarine in two.

There were no casualties as the crew were all ashore in shelters. The submarine was later raised, beached and was written off as a constructive total loss.

1941 - 1942: HMS Maidstone, Gibraltar. 1942: 10th Flotilla. Malta.

Late 1941/Early 1942: Carried out patrols up the Spanish coast to the French Riviera from Gibraltar.

February 1942: Patrol off Ras el Hamra in company with P34, P38 and Una.

 26-03-1942   HMS P39 was sitting alongside a jetty in Malta harbour, when german aircraft launched a concerted attack. P39 was seriously damaged and while she did not sink, due to the efforts of the crew, it was decided that she was to badly damaged to be worth repairing. She was towed to Kalkara and beached.

Many of the crew were later lost on Olympus on the way home
