Phoenix (N 96)
Built By: | Cammell Laird (Mersey) |
Build Group: | P |
Fate: | Phoenix sailed on patrol in the Central Mediterranean from Alexandria on 3rd July 1940. A long-range attack was made on two Italian Battle Ships and four destroyer escorts and one hit was claimed. Phoenix continued on to the patrol area off Sicily where a minefield was to be laid. The Submarine was lost with all hands on 10th July 1940, probably after a depth charge attack by the Italian Torpedo Boat Albatros off the San Croce Lighthouse at Augusta in Sicily. |
Commanders
1937: | Lieutenant Commander | David Caldicott Ingram
1940: | Lieutenant Commander | Gilbert Hugh Nowell
1940: | Lieutenant Commander | Charles Alexander Rowe
1945: | Lieutenant Commander | John Wentworth McCoy | DSC |
1935: China Station.
1939: 4th Flotilla: HMS Medway, Singapore.
1940: 1st Flotilla: HMS Medway, Alexandria.
It should be noted that boats attached to 1st Flotilla in Alexandria were likely to spend much of their time at Malta even though Malta had been given up as a submarine base due to the air attacks. Although submarines did still operate from Malta during this period the 10th Flotilla was not recognised as such until September 1941.
