HMS Syrtis was towing the X-Craft X22 in the Pentland Firth in bad weather when the Submarine was pooped and the First Lieutenant was washed overboard and was lost.

On 7th July 1941 he was appointed to the Submarine Depot Ship HMS Medway (1st Submarine Flotilla) at Alexandria, Egypt for Submarines. He returned home with an appointment to HMS Dolphin for Submarines on 25th July 1941.

His next appointment was to the Submarine Depot Ship HMS Cyclops for Submarine HMS Otway as Navigating Officer to date 9th March 1942.

This was followed by an appointment to HMS Dolphin for Submarine HMS Shakespeare completing and as Navigating Officer on Commissioning to date 6th June 1942.

On 15th October 1942 he was appointed to the Submarine Depot Ship HMS Forth at the Holy Loch for Submarine P614 as First Lieutenant and then to HMS Forth for Submarine HMS Syrtis as First Lieutenant.

He was a member of Combined Operations Pilotage Parties. On 7 March 1943 he was launched in a Folbot together with Sub Lieutenant Alfred Crossley, to carry out reconnaissance of beaches in Sicily ahead of Operation Husky. Nothing was seen of them again, despite a search for them the following night; they disappeared without trace and are assumed to have drowned.

He was appointed as a Probationary Midshipman, RNR on 20th Jan 1913. He joined the Royal Navy 'for Training' in the 15,000 ton Battleship HMS Bulwark (Captain Guy L Sclater, Royal Navy) on 4th Jul 1914.

In December 1914 Midshipman George Elliott (Seniority backdated to 18th Jan 1913) was serving in the Armed Merchant Cruiser HMS Alsatian (Captain Valentine E B Phillimore, DSO, Royal Navy) to which he had been appointed on 7th Aug 1914.

He was promoted Acting Sub Lieutenant, RNR (Seniority backdated to 18th Oct 1915) on 14th Feb 1916, to Sub Lieutenant, RNR (Seniority backdated to 2nd Apr 1916) on 3rd May 1916 and to Acting Lieutenant on 11th Aug 1916. He was, subsequently 'loaned' to the Patuca (26th Oct 1916), the Orcoma (7th Dec 1916) and to the Orvieto (10th Dec 1916) before returning to Alsatian some time in 1917.

'Brian Mahoney was appointed to HMS Varbel (12th Submarine Flotilla) at Loch Striven on 1st Aug 1943 and for X-22 in Command.

The Submarine was under tow by HMS Syrtis in the Pentland Firth when the Officer of the Watch (Lieutenant Charles Blythe, RNR) was washed overboard from the bridge of HMS Syrtis. The Commanding Officer of HMS Syrtis reversed course in an attempt to rescue his man overboard and accidentally collided with Submarine X-22.

Submarine X-22 sank at once with all hands.

Brian Mahoney was the son of Commander John Clement MacFarlane, RAN and Mrs Irene MacFarlane and the husband of Jeannie MacFarlane of Petersham, Surrey.'

The Submarine was under tow by HMS Syrtis in the Pentland Firth when the Officer of the Watch (Lieutenant Charles Blythe, RNR) was washed overboard from the bridge of HMS Syrtis. The Commanding Officer of HMS Syrtis reversed course in an attempt to rescue his man overboard and accidentally collided with Submarine X-22.

Submarine X-22 sank at once with all hands.

He served in Submarines from October 1941 in Dolphin, Parthian, P555 (IL), Storm (IL) and Taku (IL) from 28th January 1944 to 14th April 1944.

He is reported to have died in an accident at Cold Ash, Newbury, Berkshire whilst on leave. He was the husband of Isobel Stuart (nee Newbold) of Birch Tree Cottage, Cold Ash who died in the same accident.

Francis Brooks was killed when a Beaufighter (Aircraft W of 236 Squadron, RAF) in which he was flying as an Observer was attacked by a flight of Ju88's. Both the Navigator and Francis Brooks were wounded and, although the aircraft crash landed at Predannack, Francis Brooks died of his wounds.

A Tribute To Submariners

I have often looked for an opportunity of paying tribute to our submariners.

There is no branch of His Majesty's Forces which in this war has suffered the same proportion of total loss as our submarine service.

It is the most dangerous of all services.

That is perhaps the reason why the First Lord tells me that the entry into it is keenly sought by Officers and Men.

I feel sure the House would wish to testify its gratitude and admiration to our Submariners for their Skill - Courage and Devotion which has proved of inestimable value to the sustenance of our country.
