| from Brierlev Hill. Staffordshire | ||
Died from injuries sustained in a fall from a train at Winwick, near Warrington, Lancashire. He was the son of Henry and Lottie Andrews of Brierley Hill. Liverpool Echo Friday 28th April 1944: TRAGEDY OF A FAMILY TWO SONS DEAD. ONE PRISONER, FOURTH LOST FROM TRAIN Recording an open verdict at the Winwick, near Warrington, inquest, today, on Thomas Edward Andrews, aged 19, Royal Navy stoker, of Brierley Hill. Staffs.. Coroner C. Bolton said was a very sad case, because Mr and Mrs Andrews had already lost two sons in this war while another son was a prisoner of war. Evidence showed that Andrews boarded a corridor train at Glasgow and before it reached Crewe one of the doors was opened. The coroner said no-one would ever know exactly how the fatality occurred. NOTE. Thomas Andrews’ two brothers who were also lost in the War were a Petty Officer lost in HMS Veteran and a Private in the South Staffordshire Regiment (2nd Airborne Battalion) who was killed in Libya.

Samuel Dixon was born in October 1910, the son of Samuel and Agnes Dixon and entered the Royal Navy in 1928. He joined the submarine branch in February 1942 as a Petty Officer Torpedo Gunner’s Mate. He served in HM Submarines L26 and H50 before joining HMS Splendid in October 1942. Vice Admiral Sir Ian McGeoch, who had been his Commanding Officer at that time said of him later 'a calm and utterly reliable torpedo expert, one of the finest men I was privileged to be shipmates with. I certainly recommended him for a decoration, he richly deserved it.' One of the survivors when Splendid was forced to the surface after a depth charge attack, Dixon was held as a PoW in Italy and then transferred to Germany. He was killed in a strafing raid by USAAF Mustang aircraft near Halberstadt on 19 February 1945 during a forced march by his German captors away from the advancing Red Army. He left a widow, Agnes, in Folkestone, Kent. He was awarded the DSM (see London Gazette date 6th Apr 1943) his medal was presented to his wife.

'Alexander Douglas was born in 1922 and he was the son of James McGregor Douglas and Helen Douglas of Coleraine, Co. Londonderry. It is not reported when he was drafted to the Submarine Depot Ship HMS Forth (3rd Submarine Flotilla) at the Holy Loch for Submarine HMS Sceptre. Alexander is reported to have died onboard HMS Sceptre. He was sleeping in his hammock just clear of a hydraulic ram when the ram moved across at full power killing him instantly. At the time HMS Sceptre was lying off Bergen, Norway, having just towed the XCraft X-24 there for a raid on the Floating Dock at Bergen (Operation Heckle). X-24 was successfully recovered for the tow back to Scotland after the Operation. Able Seaman Douglas was buried at sea off Bergen'

George Dunkey was accidentally lost overboard and was presumed to have drowned whilst HMS Sceptre was at Loch Cairnbawn in Western Scotland. He was the son of Mr. F Dunkey and Mrs. Matilda E Dunkey. George, who was trained as a lathe operator, joined the Royal Navy at HMS Glendower on 9th November 1942. It is likely that SCEPTRE was at Loch Cairnbawn (Port HHZ) for training in towing X-Craft when the accident occurred. George Dunkey was not recovered.

Arthur Edwards was the son of Henry and Alice Edwards. Having served for a number of years in the RNVR, he signed on for twelve years with the Royal Navy on 25th March 1930 and volunteered for service in Submarines in 1933. Arthur Edwards served on both Ships and Submarines, including the Battleship HMS Valiant, the Cruiser HMS Sussex and Submarines L56, Swordfish, Snapper, L27 and P556. In January 1941, he was awarded a Mention in Dispatches for his actions during an attack on an escorted enemy supply ship. Arthur Edwards was killed in a Battery explosion onboard Submarine P556 whilst alongside at HMS Dolphin and all others onboard at the time were injured except one. Thirty-two-year-old Arthur Edwards was the husband of Marion Margaret Edwards of Barnes, Surrey and father of Marion Alice Edwards.

Commonwealth War Graves Commission
A Tribute To Submariners
I have often looked for an opportunity of paying tribute to our submariners.
There is no branch of His Majesty's Forces which in this war has suffered the same proportion of total loss as our submarine service.
It is the most dangerous of all services.
That is perhaps the reason why the First Lord tells me that the entry into it is keenly sought by Officers and Men.
I feel sure the House would wish to testify its gratitude and admiration to our Submariners for their Skill - Courage and Devotion which has proved of inestimable value to the sustenance of our country.
Winston Churchill
