Supported the British surface fleet at the 'Battle of Helgoland'.
On the night of 22nd November 1914 the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Commander Arthur George Jameson was washed overboard in rough weather and drowned. After returning to harbour Lieutenant Commander Clement G W Head was appointed 'in Command' as his replacement.
On the 24th November Submarine D2 sailed again from Harwich for a patrol off the German Coast. The Submarine did not return from patrol and was lost with all hands. It is believed that D2 was trapped in shallow water off the Ems estuary and was destroyed by German Patrol Craft.
