She was originally named P31, renamed Ullswater in February 1943 and finally renamed Uproar in April 1943.

One of her first actions, whilst serving as P31, was to participate in the operation that led to the sinking of the Bismarck, though she did not see action directly.

Adoption

Adopted by Cirencester and District whose Warship Week was held between 7-14 March 1942 when £428,019 was raised in National Savings. The inscription on the Admiralty presentation plaque is: 'Presented by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to Cirencester Rural District Council to Commemorate the Adoption of HMS P31 during Warship Week March 1942'. Died: 12th Feb, 1942.
Lieutenant
Michael Gardner was 'Officer of the Watch' on the bridge whilst on patrol in the Mediterranean. It is understood that an order was misunderstood, and the Submarine started to dive without warning. Michael Gardner was washed overboard and was lost.

 14-01-1942   HMS Uproar was damaged at Malta during an air raid
 05-03-1942   HMS Uproar torpedoes and sinks the Italian merchant Marin Sanudo about 10 nautical miles south-west of Isola di Lampione. Uproar was depth charged by the Italian torpedo boats Cigno and Procione following this attack.
 29-11-1942   HMS Uproar attacks the Italian light cruiser Raimondo Montecuccoli with torpedoes about 70 nautical miles south of Taranto, Italy. The target is not hit.
 06-07-1943   HMS Uproar torpedoes and sinks the Italian auxiliary patrol vessel D-15/Brindisi 7 nautical miles north-east of Bari, Italy.
 22-09-1943   HMS Uproar torpedoes and sinks the small Italian passenger ship Andrea Sgarallino north of Elba Island, Italy. Andrea Scarallino had some 300 civilians on board of which only four survived.
 27-09-1943   HMS Uproar torpedoes and further damages the grounded German tanker Champagne off Bastia, Corsica, France.
 06-12-1943   HMS Uproar torpedoes and damages the German troop transport Virgilio north-east of St. Tropez, southern France.
 28-12-1943   HMS Uproar fires four torpedoes against the Italian merchant Chisone off Genova, Italy. All torpedoes fired missed their target.
 29-02-1944   HMS Uproar torpedoes and sinks the Italian merchant Chietti about 11 nautical miles south of Cap Croisette, southern France.
 26-03-1944   HMS Uproar damages the German tanker Matera with gunfire inside the harbour of Oneglia, Liguria, Italy.
 30-03-1944   HMS Uproar fires four torpedoes against the German submarine U-466 off Toulon, southern France. All torpedoes miss.
