Nine of her crew rescued and taken prisoner.

1914 - 8th Flotilla. HMS Maidstone, Harwich.
1915 - Dardanelles Flotilla. Hindu Kush' at Mudros, Lemnos.

In January 1918 Submarine E14 was transferred from its base at Corfu to the Dardanelles in an attempt to locate and sink the Turkish Battleship Goben which had been damaged by mines and then run aground in the Dardanelles.

The Submarine failed to find the target which had been re-floated and towed away to safety. On 28th January 1918 E14 was badly damaged when one of her torpedoes exploded shortly after firing and was further damaged by shore based artillery after running aground at Kum Kale before finally sinking.

The Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Commander Geoffrey Saxon White, was killed by shell fire, both of his officers were killed and many of his crew were killed and injured. The survivors were made Prisoner of War.

Lieutenant Commander Geoffrey Saxon White was awarded the Victoria Cross, the fourth submarine Victoria Cross of the First World War in the Dardanelles area and the second Victoria Cross for Commanding Officers of E14.

This boat was later commanded by Lieutenant Commander Geoffrey Saxon White, who was posthumously awarded the VC for an attempt to sink the German battlecruiser Goeben in the Dardanelles in January 1918.

Lieutenant Commander Geoffrey Saxon White

Following a failed attack the German Battle Cruiser Goeben, E14 was attacked and badly damaged. Lieutenant-Commander White decided to run the risk of proceeding on the surface, after running the gauntlet for half-an-hour, being steered from below, E14 was so badly damaged that Lieutenant-Commander White turned towards the shore in order to give the crew a chance of being saved. He remained on deck the whole time himself until he was killed by a shell.

E 14 - The One That Got Away

E14 was employed in the Dardanelle's theatre of war. Her distinction is that she had two commanding officers, each of whom won the Victoria Cross in the same area but three years apart

Prize Bounty or Head Money was a grant from the Crown out of moneys provided by Parliament as a reward for the sinking or capture of an armed vessel belonging to enemy forces, and intended primarily as an encouragement of personal gallantry and enterprise.

 27-04-1915   In spite of great navigational difficulties succeeded in sinking two Turkish gunboats and one large military transport for which a VC was awarded.

AB Reuben Joseph Edwin Mitchell, DSM RAN Official Number 7476 was an Australian born submariner who had served on AE2.
