HMS Titania was building as a civil vessel, but was purchased in 1915 and converted to a submarine depot ship.

Titania completed conversion to a depot ship in November, 1915 and started with the Eleventh Submarine Flotilla, serving the submarines of the Eleventh Submarine Flotilla at Blyth 1915-1918 as they supported the Grand Fleet.

At the end of 1920, she was serving as flagship of the China Submarine Flotilla.
