Prior to the Allied landings in Italy in September, HMS/M Severn had been involved in cloak & dagger operations such as the landing of commandoes on the island of Sardinia where they were to destroy the torpedo bomber base at Cagliari (but that's another story). The year was 1943 and the events recounted herein occurred towards the end of that year, following the unconditional surrender of the Italians in September.
HMS Severn torpedoes and sinks the Swedish (in German service) sailing vessel Monark off Lister, Norway and unsuccessfully attacked another of approx 6,000 ton vessel.
Submerged: 13 miles at 10 knots or 118 miles at 4 knots (service)

XE-11 had been calibrating instruments in Loch Striven. The Submarine was changing depth and was in collision with a Ministry of War Transport Boom Defence Vessel (previously the Fleetwood Steam Trawler Norina which was laying buoys.
