HMS Adamant was a purpose-built submarine depot ship, ordered in March 1939 and commissioned in February 1942. She was designed with the specific capability to service and accommodate the crews of up to nine submarines concurrently. Her onboard facilities were comprehensive, including a foundry, light and heavy machine shops, electrical repair shops, torpedo repair shops, and specialized equipment to support fitters, patternmakers, coppersmiths, and shipwrights.
Initially allocated to the Eastern Fleet, HMS Adamant sailed in convoys through Freetown, Capetown, Durban, and Mombasa, eventually reaching Kilindini in May 1942. She later operated from Colombo and Trincomalee, providing essential support to the 4th Submarine Flotilla.
In March 1944, HMS Maidstone joined her at Trincomalee, leading to the formation of the 8th Submarine Flotilla.
Adamant transferred to Fremantle, Western Australia, in April 1945, where she continued to support T class submarines in operations against Japanese forces until the conclusion of the war. She played a crucial role in keeping Royal Navy submarines operational in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, especially in their campaigns against Japanese shipping.
After WWII, Adamant returned to the UK but remained in service. She supported British submarines during the early Cold War, operating primarily from home waters and occasionally abroad.
Paid Off 1950 but recommissioned in 1954. She was based at Portland, a key Royal Navy submarine base, for many years, serving as a key support vessel for conventional (non-nuclear) submarines.
