12-05-2013   HMS Trenchant returned home to Devonport 11 months to the day she sailed on what became the longest patrol ever completed by one of the Royal Navy’s hunter-killer boats – beating the old record by HMS Tireless by 12 days.

At continued high readiness as the United Kingdoms front-line strike asset, the submarine spent 267 days east of Suez, continuing the nuclear-powered submarine presence that has been established there since 2001.

Operating under joint command, the submarine has completed several periods of national tasking and contributed to NATO operations against terrorism and counter narcotics.

During this time the vessel has visited six different ports: Fujairah, UAE; the British Indian Ocean Territory – Diego Garcia; the Kingdom of Bahrain; Aqaba, Jordan; Souda Bay, Crete; and Gibraltar.

HMS Trenchant conducted training and multi-national exercises with seven UK warships, a French submarine, multiple US warships and auxiliaries, a US submarine and a range of multinational aircraft - to develop the ability to conduct joint operations.

The deployment covered 38,800nm (the equivalent of 1¾ times around the world) and the submarine has spent over 4,700 hours underwater – the equivalent of 6½ months.

The submarine would now undergo a two-year maintenance period readying the boat for renewed operations.
07-08-2016   The crew of HMS Trenchant staged a ceremony in Plymouth marking the vessel’s readiness for operations.

The occasion marked the submarine’s reintegration into the fleet after undergoing a maintenance and weapon and sensors upgrade in Devonport Naval Base. The submarine holds the RN submarine record for a continuous deployment of 11 months in 2013.

A rededication ceremony is a traditional part of any Royal Navy vessel’s life after completing a period of refit and improvement. The event was attended by the submarine’s sponsor, Lady Meriel Hunt.
21-02-2017   HMS Trenchant re-joined the operational fleet. The Plymouth-based boat was alongside in Devonport Naval Base while her engineers were busy finishing the final stages of a maintenance period.
13-05-2022   HMS Talent and Trenchant were decommissioned together at Devonport Naval Base on Friday.

Crews from both nuclear-powered attack boats paraded in Plymouth for the final time in front of HRH The Princess Royal, HMS Talent’s patron, as well as high-profile guests and former commanding officers.

Red Star Under the Baltic
Red Star Under The Baltic is the graphic memoir of a Soviet submariner during his years at sea in the Baltic during the Second World War. Not only is this a superb record of the appalling conditions endured on these basic craft, but a very human account detailing the comradeship and tensions among the crew as they operated in the most life-threatening conditions.
